On Wednesday, August 12, 2026, at sunset, Menorca will experience one of the most extraordinary astronomical spectacles seen in Europe in living memory: a total solar eclipse. It will be the first total solar eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula in over a century, and it won’t happen again from our island for generations. Using official data from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) and the Govern de les Illes Balears, this guide brings together everything you need: what an eclipse is and how it works, exact timings down to the second, maps and the best places to watch it, weather, eye safety, photography, getting around, tips for families, children, older people and people with reduced mobility, the most common mistakes, and a complete plan for the day. What exactly is a total solar eclipse?

A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon positions itself exactly between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow onto the Earth’s surface. It might seem like this should happen every month, with every new moon, but it doesn’t: the Moon’s orbit is tilted about 5 degrees relative to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, so the lunar shadow almost always passes “above” or “below” the Earth. The three celestial bodies only align with the necessary precision a couple of times a year, and of those occasions, very few produce a total eclipse visible from an inhabited location.

The Moon’s shadow has two parts: a central, dark area called the umbra, where the Sun is completely covered, and a wider, fainter outer area called the penumbra, where only part of the solar disk is obscured. If you are within the umbra—a narrow band barely a hundred kilometers wide that sweeps across the Earth at high speed—you see a total eclipse. If you are in the penumbra, you see a partial eclipse, much more common and far less spectacular. Menorca is fortunate to be right within that narrow band of totality on August 12, 2026.

During the seconds when the Sun is completely hidden, its corona becomes visible: the faint outer atmosphere of the Sun, normally invisible due to the glare of the solar disk, which appears as a whitish, diffuse halo around the black silhouette of the Moon. It is, according to those who have witnessed it, one of nature’s most awe-inspiring sights.

Menorca’s 2026 eclipse is total. It’s the only type that allows you, for a few brief seconds, to look at the Sun safely with the naked eye.

Why this eclipse is so special for Spain and Menorca

The last total solar eclipse visible from Spain took place on August 30, 1905. More than 120 years have passed. The 2026 eclipse will be the first total eclipse visible from the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands in over a century. This will be followed by another total eclipse on August 2, 2027 (visible as total only from the southern tip of Andalusia, Ceuta, and Melilla) and an annular eclipse on January 26, 2028, completing the so-called “Iberian eclipse trio.” After the total eclipse of August 2, 2027, Spain will not experience another total solar eclipse until 2053; the 2028 one will be annular, not total. It is, without exaggeration, a “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity for the vast majority of us.

What makes the 2026 eclipse unique in our islands is that it occurs practically at sunset. The path of totality travels across the Earth from west to east—from the Arctic, through Greenland and Iceland, crossing the Iberian Peninsula from A Coruña to the Balearics—and reaches Menorca in its final stages, with the Sun already very low on the horizon. Menorca will be the first Balearic island to enter totality and one of the last Spanish territories crossed by the lunar shadow, with the Sun between 1.4° and 2° high depending on the point on the island: the choice of observation site is absolutely decisive, as we will see.

These are the calculated times for Ciutadella de Menorca (official mainland and Balearic time, CEST), according to the National Geographic Institute’s viewer. They may vary by a few seconds depending on the exact point on the island you observe from:

Duration of totality in Ciutadella: 1 minute and 12 seconds. According to data from the Govern de les Illes Balears, totality begins first in Menorca (at 8:30:01 PM) and progresses south to Formentera (8:33:23 PM). It will be slightly shorter than in Mallorca (where it reaches a minute and a half) but an equally unforgettable moment. Sunset will occur approximately between 8:43 PM and 8:45 PM depending on the point in Menorca; the partial phase will continue astronomically after sunset, but will no longer be visible from the island. Duration and Sun altitude: why Menorca is an extreme case

In most eclipses, the recommendation is to seek height. Here it is the opposite. The fact that changes everything is the height of the Sun: during totality it will be approximately between 1.4° and 2° above the horizon, depending on the exact observation point in Menorca—the lowest in all of Spain; in Ciutadella it is around 2°. For comparison, in A Coruña the Sun will be at 12 degrees and in Burgos at 8. Two degrees is, roughly, the width of two fingers held together at arm’s length.

This has three practical consequences:

  • Any obstacle—a hill, a building, a tree, a boat, even a bank of low clouds—can completely block totality.
  • The solar corona, which can be up to 3 degrees across, will sit almost “resting” on the sea: a rare and spectacular image.
  • The sea horizon on the west coast is, literally, the best possible “seat”, because the sea guarantees a clean, unobstructed line.

It calculates whether the maximum will be visible from your location, taking into account the real horizon profile (not just coordinates). Includes a compass and simulation. Available in Catalan, Spanish, English and German.
  • IGN viewer: to-the-second timings for any point on the island, with the eclipse sequence.
  • HERMES viewer (Ministry of Transport): path, duration and percentage of darkening overlaid with roads, ports and airports. Useful for planning mobility.

The best places to watch the eclipse in Menorca

Because the Sun will be almost touching the horizon, the key isn’t elevation but a completely open, unobstructed western horizon: no mountains, buildings, trees or low clouds. All recommended spots are on the western half of the island. I’ve grouped them by type so you can choose based on your plan.

Best beaches and coves to watch it

  • Cala en Bosc: coast open to the sunset, with a seaside promenade, bars, and toilets nearby. The resort’s parking is large but will fill up very early that day, and at that time there is hardly any shade. Nearby alternative if it gets saturated: the Son Xoriguer area.
  • Cala Blanca: somewhat less crowded, with an open horizon to the west from the rocks on the sides of the cove and restaurants within the resort itself. Street parking is available; it is advisable to arrive early and walk the last few meters.
  • Cala Santandria: a sheltered inlet just minutes from Ciutadella, convenient for families, with bars next to the sand. Street parking is limited: the earlier you arrive, the better the spot.
  • Son Xoriguer and the Cap d’Artrutx area: the southwestern tip of the island, with the Artrutx lighthouse as a reference, a flat promenade facing the sunset directly, and Cala en Bosc services a short walk away. There is usually a sea breeze: pleasant in August, but secure your tripod.

Best lighthouses

  • Far de Punta Nati: offers an excellent horizon to the west, but road access is narrow and parking is very limited. It is likely to be one of the most popular spots, so it is not advisable to travel there without first checking the official restrictions planned for August 12 (pending confirmation). There is hardly any shade, the final stretch may require walking, and you must bring water; never park outside permitted areas or block the path. In its favor: it is right on the Camí de Cavalls and is one of the darkest areas of the island, ideal for staying afterwards to see the Perseids.
  • Far d’Artrutx: at the southwestern tip, with perfect orientation for the sunset, flat terrain, and relatively nearby parking. Of the lighthouses, the most convenient.
  • Far de Cavalleria: although it is in the north, its cliffs open to the west offer a clean horizon and a spectacular setting. Paved road to the lighthouse parking (limited) and a short final walk; area very exposed to the wind and without shade or services. Check the exact visibility beforehand with Horitzó 2026.

Best cliffs and viewpoints

  • Cliffs of Punta Nati and the north coast of Ciutadella: height and a 180° marine horizon, with the same precautions for access, parking, and water as the Punta Nati lighthouse.
  • Pont d’en Gil: the natural arch on the west coast, one of the most famous sunset viewpoints on the island. It is reached by walking from the Cala en Blanes area along a stretch of coast without shade or services; use great caution with the cliff edge and expect it to be crowded.   • Passeig Marítim de Ciutadella: flat, paved, and accessible, with a clear view of the sea, the port, and the old town in the background, and bars and services just a step away. From the sea

Observing the eclipse from the sea can offer a clear horizon, but requires professional planning. It should only be done with an experienced skipper or an authorized company, checking the maritime forecast, navigation warnings, and possible temporary restrictions that may be established beforehand. It is not advisable to improvise a trip or an anchorage during an event of this magnitude.

Sun direction and horizon

At maximum eclipse, the Sun will be towards the west-northwest, with an azimuth of about 288°. In practice: stand facing the sea on the west coast and look for the point where the Sun is setting. A compass (or the one in the Horitzó 2026 app) will confirm the exact direction. The day before, at the same time, check that there’s no obstacle (crane, mast, headland) on that line. The Govern carried out an official visibility rehearsal on April 29 and 30 precisely to verify these points: if the Sun was visible at that time on those days, it will also be visible on August 12.

Weather: chances of clear skies

Climatologically, August is one of Menorca’s most stable and driest months, with predominantly clear skies and a low chance of rain. That’s in your favour. But an eclipse this low on the horizon has a specific enemy: low clouds over the sea, which can form even if the rest of the sky is clear. Recommendations:

  • Check the AEMET forecast and cloud maps in the 3–4 days beforehand, paying attention to low cloud on the sea horizon.
  • Always have a plan B at another point on the west coast that you can reach with time to spare.
  • Remember that high clouds (cirrus) can still allow you to see the event; low clouds are what ruin it.
  • From the sea there is more room to avoid cloud cover, but only with an experienced skipper or an authorized company (see the “From the sea” section).

Light pollution and Menorca’s Starlight advantage

Menorca has been a Starlight Reserve and Tourist Destination since 2019 (certified by the Starlight Foundation), and the whole island is part of a Biosphere Reserve. It has a Night Sky Protection Regulation and maximum darkness zones—Punta Nati, Macarella-Son Saura, Cavalleria-Cala del Pilar, Monte Toro, s’Albufera des Grau, among others—with virtually no light pollution.

For the eclipse itself, with the Sun still above the horizon, light pollution isn’t decisive. But it becomes crucial right after: if you stay at a dark spot on the west coast after sunset, you’ll have an exceptional sky for the second part of the night (see the Perseids, below). Choosing a Starlight spot means making the most of the eclipse and the night sky in the same evening.

Expected crowds and getting around

Very high attendance is expected from “eclipse chasers” and visitors from all over Europe, in mid-August when the island is already in peak season. The authorities have been preparing for over a year:

  • The Balearic Government has activated the ECLIPBAL protocol, within the Territorial Civil Protection Plan, to coordinate safety, mobility and crowds.
  • Safe viewing areas (ZOO) are being defined—around thirty across the Balearics—and published on the official website.
  • There may be access restrictions at certain coastal points: one-way traffic, parking limits or vehicle weight limits, rather than full closures.
  • The State has created an Interministerial Commission and published specific traffic measures in the BOE for the trio of eclipses.

Practical consequence: do not rely on a single access point or improvise at the last minute. Specific measures are pending official confirmation: this guide will be updated when the authorities publish the special mobility, safety, and access plan. How to get there, parking and public transport

How to get to the west coast

Most recommended spots are in the municipality of Ciutadella, at the western end of the island, about 45 minutes by car from Maó airport via the main road Me-1. From Ciutadella, the southwest resorts (Cala en Bosc, Cala Blanca, Cala Santandria) are 10–15 minutes away.

Parking

  • In Ciutadella there is free parking on the Sant Nicolau promenade and the seafront, as well as paid parking (blue zone) in the centre.
  • At the southwest coves, car parks will fill up very early that day: plan to arrive 2–3 hours earlier or park farther away and walk.
  • In natural spots like Punta Nati, space is limited and access is via a narrow road: prioritise arriving early and don’t block paths or emergency access routes.

Public transport

Menorca has regular bus lines connecting Maó and Ciutadella year-round, and in summer there are services from Ciutadella station to the southern and southwestern coves. That day demand will be higher than usual and some lines may be reinforced or reorganised: check updated timetables with the operator. Taking public transport and walking the last stretch can save you the parking hassle.

Eye Safety: The Most Important Thing

You can never look directly at the Sun without proper protection, except during the exact seconds of totality, when the solar disk is completely covered by the Moon.

  • Always use certified eclipse glasses (standard ISO 12312-2). Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark they seem, do not protect you: they let through infrared and ultraviolet radiation that can damage your retina without you noticing. X-rays, smoked glass and homemade filters don’t work either.
  • Buy your glasses in advance from a reliable supplier: they sell out in the days beforehand. The Govern has reminded the retail sector that only products that meet international standards should be sold.
  • Throughout the partial phase (before and after totality), observe in short intervals—no more than 30 seconds at a time—and with your glasses on.
  • You can only take off your glasses during exact totality. As soon as the first flash of light reappears (diamond ring), put them back on immediately.
  • If you use a camera, binoculars or a telescope, they need their own solar filter during the partial phase; looking at the Sun through optics without a filter is especially dangerous.
  • An alternative and completely safe method is indirect projection: make a small hole in a cardboard sheet and project the Sun’s image onto another surface, never looking directly.

Eclipse photography

Photographing an eclipse with the Sun at 2° above the sea is difficult and beautiful at the same time. Ideas to get it right:

  • Partial phase: a solar filter on the lens is mandatory. Without it, you’ll damage the sensor (and your eyesight if you use an optical viewfinder).
  • Totality: remove the filter to capture the corona. Use varied exposures (bracketing) because the brightness range is huge.
  • With a phone: solar filter in front of the lens during the partial phase; during totality you can remove it. Lock focus and exposure manually.
  • Composition: take advantage of how low the Sun is to include the sea, a lighthouse or a coastline silhouette. That’s Menorca’s big differentiator.
  • Golden tip: spend most of those 72 seconds watching, not looking at the screen. The live corona doesn’t fit in any photo.

Tips for families, children, older people and reduced mobility

For families and children

  • It’s a fantastic educational experience: explain beforehand how the Sun–Earth–Moon system works using a torch and two balls.
  • Each child should have their own certified glasses, and an adult should supervise to make sure they don’t take them off during the partial phase.
  • Choose a comfortable spot with nearby services (Cala en Bosc, Cala Santandria) so you have toilets and shade during the long wait.
  • Turn the afternoon into a picnic: it’ll make the wait easier and create the memory.

For older people

  • Prioritise spots with easy access and little walking: the Passeig Marítim de Ciutadella or Cala Santandria.
  • A chair with a backrest, plenty of water and sun protection; the wait can be several hours in the heat.
  • Avoid narrow road access and walking stretches to lighthouses if mobility is limited.

For people with reduced mobility

  • The Passeig Marítim de Ciutadella is the best option: paved, flat, with a western horizon and close to parking and services.
  • Some Ciutadella beaches have boardwalks; check which ones will keep access that day.
  • Arrive very early to secure a nearby accessible parking space, given the special traffic plan.
  • Check the official website to see whether the safe viewing areas provide reserved spaces.

Mistakes most visitors make

  • Choosing the spot for the scenery and not for the western horizon. A beautiful viewpoint facing east or blocked by a hill won’t work for this eclipse.
  • Arriving late. With the planned traffic measures, anyone leaving at the last minute could end up stuck on the road during totality.
  • Using regular sunglasses. They don’t protect you. Only ISO 12312-2 certified glasses work.
  • Buying the glasses on the same day. They sell out; buy them weeks in advance.
  • Not checking the real horizon. A mast, a crane or a bank of low clouds can block 2°. Use Horitzó 2026 and check the day before.
  • Watching totality through your phone. Experience it with your eyes; the camera can’t capture what the eye sees.
  • Relying on a single spot. Always have a plan B in case of clouds or saturated access.
  • Forgetting it’s at sunset. After that there’s no margin: the Sun sets. There won’t be a “second chance” that day.

Historical curiosities: how previous eclipses were experienced in Spain

August 12, 2026 won’t be the first time the Balearics become a global stage for an eclipse. On August 30, 1905, a total solar eclipse crossed Spain and was visible as total from the islands. Unlike the 2026 eclipse, that one happened at midday (around 12:02 in the Balearics) and totality lasted almost four minutes, making it an extraordinary scientific opportunity.

It was a major social and scientific event. Dozens of international expeditions travelled to the mainland and the islands: British and German commissions and the Russian Academy of Sciences. In Burgos, hot-air balloons—the Júpiter, the Urano and the Marte—were launched, and the young engineer Emilio Herrera became one of the first people to observe totality from the air, leaving a memorable description of the corona above a sea of clouds. In Mallorca, expeditions set up at the Son Espanyolet Velodrome and the Grand Hotel; factories were even ordered to close during the eclipse so smoke wouldn’t cloud the atmosphere. One of the drivers of the British expedition, G. F. Chambers, ended up observing it from the sea—an option that, with proper professional planning, still makes sense 121 years later.

That eclipse was part of a historic “trio” (1900, 1905 and 1912) that the international astronomical community dubbed “the Spanish eclipses”. History rhymes: 2026, 2027 and 2028 form the new Iberian trio.

A Golden End to the Night: The Perseids

The eclipse date coincides almost exactly with the peak of the Perseids, the famous August meteor shower. If the sky stays clear and you’re at a dark spot on the west coast—one of the Starlight maximum-darkness zones—you can stay after sunset and enjoy a second astronomical show that same night: two celestial events in a single evening, something truly exceptional. Menorca, as a Starlight Reserve, is one of the best places in the Mediterranean for it.

Yes, with a solar filter on the lens during the partial phase. You can remove it during totality. Manually lock focus and exposure and prepare your shot beforehand, because totality lasts little more than a minute.

Is it safe for children?

Yes, provided they wear certified glasses throughout the partial phase and are supervised. It’s a magnificent educational experience.

When was the last total eclipse in Spain?

August 30, 1905. In the Balearics, it was seen at midday and lasted almost four minutes. After the total eclipse of August 2, 2027, there will not be another total eclipse in Spain until 2053; the 2028 one will be annular, not total.

Will there be traffic cuts or many people?

A very high influx is expected. The Balearic Government is activating the ECLIPBAL protocol and preparing safe observation areas, with possible access restrictions on the west coast (pending official confirmation). Arrive 2-3 hours in advance and consult the official website.
