Tradition attributes the city’s name to the Carthaginian general Mago, Hannibal’s brother, and with the Roman conquest in 123 BC the site was consolidated as Portus Magonis.

The British century: the capital that arrived by sea

The big turning point came in the 18th century. The British, who ruled Menorca in three periods between 1708 and 1802, quickly understood the harbour’s military value, and in 1722 Governor Richard Kane moved the capital from Ciutadella to Maó. From that era we still have the Camí d’en Kane, sash windows and boinders (bow windows), a taste for gin… and a good share of the anglicisms in Menorcan Catalan.

Bourgeois and seafaring Maó

During the 19th century, Maó enjoyed its commercial golden age: the fortress of La Mola (1852) protected the harbour entrance, the Teatre Principal premiered Italian operas, and merchants built the stately homes that still give the centre its character. Today it’s a calm, authentic city, where life still revolves around the market, the squares and the harbour.

⚓ The harbour: 5 kilometres of history

Maó harbour is the city’s reason for being: an estuary almost 5 kilometres long, deep and sheltered, considered one of the largest natural harbours in the Mediterranean.
